Amigoni Family Vineyards was established in 2000.  Currently, the 10 acre farm has 4.0 acres of vinifera grapes.  Vinifera grapes are the vine species that produces over 99 percent of the world's wines today. It is native to Europe as well as East and Central Asia, but it has been planted all over the world. There are estimated to be thousands of varieties of this species, some of the best known being Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Chardonnay, Chenin Blanc, Merlot, Pinot Noir, Riesling, Sauvignon Blanc, Syrah, and Zinfandel.  Amigoni Vineyards has the majority of the vineyard planted to Cabernet Franc, Chardonnay and Cabernet Sauvignon.  Other varieties planted in the vineyard are Viognier, Mourvedre,Petit Verdot and Malbec.

Amigoni Vineyards is located about 30 miles east of Kansas City, Missouri just off Route 50 near a small town called Centerview, Missouri.  Map to Vineyard The vineyard is about 7 miles west of Warrensburg, MO.  My vineyard is manicured on Friday, Sat or Sunday.  Make an appointment to come see the vineyard, but make sure you have your Carhart's on.  Great advice is not FREE.

The Terroir:

The 10 acres of land has a limestone and shale bedrock base about 60 inches from the surface which is ideal for grapes roots.  The surface layer of the land is black, firm silty-clay loam.  The land is terraced and has a unique terroir that should allow very good ripening of the grapes, moderate air circulation and black limestone influences that will add to the complexity of the grape juice.  The first section of the vineyard that was planted is called Limestone Hill.  Limestone Hill is an 1.5 acres in size. The another block just to the west of Limestone Hill is called Stealth Ridge.  Being located very close to Whiteman AFB, these planes are frequently seen in the sky above the vineyard.  Stealth Ridge is about an 1 acre in size.  Our third block is called To Kati after my daughter.  This block is very large, 5.0 acres.  We have started planting lots and lots of Cabernet Sauvignon/Cabernet Franc, our signature reds for Inland Sea, a Kansas City Urban winery.  Additionally, we have planted some of the first plantings of Mourvedre and Petit Verdot in Missouri. Both of these varieties have been approved for commercial growing in Virginia.  These grapes have promise to be good blending grapes.  In 2006, another acre of Chardonnay clone 96 and a teaser of  Viognier clone 642 was planted.  Learn more about the up and coming grape Viognier by clicking here: Enjoy Viognier

Our vineyard is very unique for Missouri.  Most plantings of grapes in Missouri focused on the hybrid grapes typically grown in this area.  Instead, we are focusing on premium grape varieties that require more attention to vineyard practices, fungal control and trellis management.  Our methods must be more precise and have required spreadsheets to regulate sprayings of fungicides, herbicides and micro-nutrients.  For example, crop loads are maintained by precise counts of fruiting buds on the cordons and ripening is maintained by expected leaf counts on the fruiting canes.  In the end, we believe our fruit and resulting wine is on par with classic continental European climate grape quality.  We find that the wine from Missouri Cabernet Franc will fall somewhere between the cooler  Loire Valley of France and warmer Mediterranean climate of California.  It is truly exciting to see the developments in the vineyards as we approach our 6th year in 2007 and to watch the aging of the wine at Inland Sea winery.
